We all benefit from collaboration that is inclusive of different racial, cultural, and socio-economic perspectives. Personally, there’s nothing more touching and enlightening than hearing the joy and pain of someone’s journey through identity. Yet science, and academia in particular, can be fraught with barriers to equity, diversity, and inclusion. As an American man of white European decent, I am committed to using my cultural privilege to promote systemic change, boost the voices of minoritized groups, and speak out against unfair behavior.

I am open to receiving emails from people looking for advice about academia and the publishing process: jusinowicz [at] gmail.com.

For example, I might be able to help if you are thinking about grad school but find it daunting to navigate the many unspoken rules for gaining access. Here is a slideshow for a short workshop that I have given on applying to grad school (originally for WildResearch in British Columbia): applying to grad school PDF.

Ecology is always the best when you can get your feet wet and your hands dirty! Furthermore, research suggests that field experiences are one of the best ways to break down barriers to equity, diversity, and inclusion in Ecology. I love taking kids on outdoor experiences to teach them about the many wonders and intricacies of biology in the field. I have led short excursions (e.g. 4 hours or less) for groups across many ages.
